Want to elaborate on other aspects of my persona in my films : Katrina Kaif

In an interview to a leading daily, Katrina Kaif revealed many facets of her personality, her approach to work and life and also that she can now not only speak in Hindi but has also learnt how to read the Devanagari script!

Katrina talked about how Jackie Shroff taught her how to read Devanagari script and how she would learn Hindi for three hours every day. Katrina reminisced about how 11 years back scripts were sometimes written on the sets in Hindi and hence it was important to know the language. She also revealed that today she insists that her scripts be written in Devanagari so that she can read them in her room.

When asked about the directors whom she had connected with the most, Katrina said,

“In the initial years Kabir Khan for sure. During the making of New York, he became a good friend. He had a lot of trust in me. Then I connected immensely as a woman with Zoya Akhtar while making Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Working on Fitoor with Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor), I get what he is saying. I know that he will put me up in a new and interesting way, but what is nice is that he is also interested in hearing your point of view.”

She also explained why was it important for her to have a connection with her directors, “It’s very important for me, more important for me than for most people. People may not realise it, but I am actually a very sensitive person. So if my director has a disconnect with me or shows disinterest, I can sense it. So I need to connect, otherwise I feel alone and unwanted.”

Katrina elaborated on her private nature being mistaken for her being arrogant and said, “I am a private person, but am extremely sensitive and very emotional. I am quiet and mind my business. I keep to myself for the most part and the people in my life are the people in my life and they have my dedication, time and support. When I am working, I am 100% professional. I can live a very private life. I do stay away from events or functions or parties. I want to balance the things I do. Very few actors can say that they are arrogant. They are the most uncertain people as everyday you are faced with lesser comings or your weaker side.”

When asked about how competitive Katrina thought of her own self, she stated that it depends on the phase she is in her life and that her goals change on their own “organically and naturally” and that they are not the same they were three years back. She stated that she was much more calm than she had been previously but that it did not mean her focus or drive was any lesser. Instead all it actually means is that she was balancing her work and personal life better and taking satisfaction from both.

Katrina also commented on how she wishes to elaborate on other aspects of her personality in her films and said, “There was a time when I wanted to do as much as I could in the dancing and glamour space. But I think I achieved a lot in that. That does not mean that I don’t want to do something new in that or a new film on dance, but now I also want to elaborate on other aspects of my persona in my films. To do characters that can show a different aspect of your personality, maybe the more serious, confused, layered, complex and anxious side of you, something every woman can connect with.”

Katrina also stated that she felt a lot more secure than she had before and that everyone goes through moments of insecurity in their lives with regard to work, people in their lives and their family but that one has to try and find peace with oneself and that life assists in this process,

“What life will give you is some amazing moments and at other times, will give you things you really don’t expect. You need to experience your lows at times. Then when the high comes back, which it always does, you feel so much higher and better. Different strokes for different folks, but for me, I try and remain happy for the balance that I have in my life.”

Katrina also talked about how she has always been religious and though she has a Christian mother and a Muslim father, their family has been brought up to respect all faiths. She also said that she has a mandir at home and though she does not do pooja, she does light a diya sometimes.

Katrina also confessed to being a terrible cook in the interview.

Katrina will soon be seen in Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Fitoor’ with Aditya Roy Kapoor as well as Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’ with Ranbir Kapoor.
